A completely realistic fall Saturday
Rake in the morning, bake in the afternoon. Here's how that plan actually goes, hour by hour.

Every fall the plan is the same. Rake the yard in the morning, bake something in the afternoon, and be the kind of person with a tidy lawn and a warm kitchen by dinner.
Here's how that actually goes.
9:00 AM. Coffee. Big plans. The rake is in the garage, behind two other rakes nobody remembers buying.
9:40 AM. First pile. A great pile. You stand back and admire it for longer than it took to rake.
10:15 AM. The wind picks up. The pile is now spread evenly across your yard, your neighbor's yard and part of the street.
10:30 AM. Apple crisp goes in the oven. Raking was always a two-part plan, and the second part smells better.
11:00 AM. The dog finds the pile. You pretend to be upset. You are not upset.
11:45 AM. Second pile. Smaller, but you're older now.
12:30 PM. The apple crisp is out. Raking pauses for quality control. The kitchen is a little hazy, and it isn't the oven.
2:00 PM. Three bags lined up at the curb like they're waiting for a bus. You take a picture and send it to people who did not ask.
3:00 PM. More leaves have fallen. You've never been more at peace with something being tomorrow's problem.
4:00 PM. Couch. Sweater. Third helping. Rake and bake: complete. Both kinds.

That whole day fits on one paper leaf bag, stuffed to the top, with the rake leaning on it like it earned a break. Rake & Bake is one of our twelve Evergreens, on tees, long sleeves, hoodies, hats and mugs, for anyone whose fall plans are half yard work and half getting baked. Pies included.
